1. What’s one of your favorite childhood memories?
Going on camping trips with my dad and younger brothers.
2. Did you have a nickname as a kid?
’Pad’ and my mom always called me ‘Bug.’ Also, ‘Paddy’ because my full name is actually Alfred Patrick Smithwick III.
3. Why did you choose to become a pediatric dentist?
Because kids are awesome. I can make a big difference in children’s lives like my pediatric dentist did. Not just in oral health either but in all aspects of a child’s life. From sports to interests, to relationships to overall growth and development as a young kiddo in this crazy/busy world.
4. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I’d probably choose to fly. I like to get from point A to point B as soon as possible.
5. What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?
Becoming a pediatric dentist because I love what I do and I get to help tons of little rascals.
6. What’s your hidden talent?
I have a photographic memory. I can’t watch a movie more than once because I remember all the details too vividly. It does help with teeth though because if you break a tooth, I remember what it looked like before…literally!
7. How would you describe yourself in five words?
Driven, Active, Fun, Athletic, Generous, Interesting…wait, is that six? Haha.
8. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what it would it be?
Probably some sort of seafood. I’m from Maryland so crabs are a big one for me. That or a nice steak.
9. What do you think sets you apart from other pediatric dentists?
I don’t take myself too seriously and I can be goofy and laugh at myself but I’m also professional. I like to get on each child’s level when I explain things so they aren’t scary. I gain every patient’s trust before working on them.
10. What’s on your bucket list?
Ski off a mountain and then parachute down!

11. If you could go pro in any sport, which one would you choose?
Ice hockey. I grew up playing hockey at my old house, which was actually called ‘The Pond House.’
12. What’s the best piece of dental advice you can give parents?
That’s an easy one. FIRST DENTAL VISIT AT AGE ONE. Both the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) agree that the first dental visit should be at age one.
13. If you had a time machine, which era would be your first stop?
Probably the 60s.
14. What’s the most incredible view you’ve ever seen?
Camping on a cliff in Alaska and looking at the amazing skyline.
15. What color is your toothbrush?
A white Sonicare.
16. If you could be any animal, what would you be?
A horse but not just any horse, Sea Biscuit. He had the biggest heart of any horse on the planet.
17. What’s the best part of going to work at Kids Mile High every day?
Working with all the kiddos. They keep me on my toes and they keep me young.
18. What’s your favorite movie?
Good Will Hunting.
19. What actor would play you in the movie of your life?
George Clooney. People say we look alike and we both have a little “chalk dust” in our hair.
20. What was the last gift you received?
When I went home, my parents hosted a huge birthday dinner/party with all my oldest friends and family members. That was my last gift and it was a great one!
